The Reason
200,000,000 people worldwide, 230,000 in Bulgaria and approximately 3,000 in the Municipality of Pazardzhik are users of mental health services. There are currently no organized sporting events that include all users. Even the Paraolympic Committee does not identify such a category of competitors.
With the support of Pazardzhik Municipality, Association “Chovekolubie” held five national chess tournaments for mental health users from 2004 to 2008. In 2009, the assocation held its first international chess tournament with thirty-four competitors from Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary.
Goals
Initiative “Friendship Without Borders” is an invitation to mental health organizations around the world for networking on issues of mutual interest: a sport for people with psychiatric diagnoses, anti-stigma campaigns, training programs for social skills learning, educational trips to exchange experience, and more.
Financing Organizations
Initiative “Friendship Without Borders” is funded by the Community Foundation Fund in Pazardzhik and the Workshop for Civic Initiatives Foundation in Sofia.
